I had bought this book to relive those moments I had spent glued to Doordarshan and watching Rajit Kapoor enacting the role of Byomkesh Bakshi. There are very few English translation of Byomkesh bakshi stories available. I had already read Sreejata Guha “Picture Imperfect & other Byomkesh Bakshi stories” and wanted to catch a few more stories.
I felt slightly disappointed with this translation. The writing is oversimplified, to an extent that it fails to capture the tempo & suspense of the...more

Translations, as I've written before, are always tricky. It's very hard to catch the real substance of the original, and in sparse fiction like this, it's important to translate the original words into those equivalent not just in meaning but also in force and sentiment. While I think Monimala Dhar, the translator, seems to have done a decent job, there could have been more tight editing of her English. In many places, the English is typically early-twenty-first-century Indian, in a way that lac...more
(This is not the book I am reading. I am reading a Bengali book named 'Saradindu Amnibas' which contains all the stories of Byomkesh Bakshi. Since goodreads doesn't have the book I am forced to add this to count for my Reading Challenge)
Felt like watching the serial. With Rajat kapoor infront of my eyes along with ajith babu and solving the cases.
An endearing affable man who calls himself a seeker of truth and not a detective, is the stuff of legends and not unknown to anyone who grew up in the 90s. I'll keep the review short and simply say that this is a treat which one must savour.
It is said that a translation can sometimes be no match to the original. I dare say that it may be true but who knows? I cannot read Bengali and cannot help but feel how it would be to read the original unadulterated version by Saradindu Bandopadhyay. I do fe...more

The book was a disappointment. After reading Satyajit Ray's 'Adventures of Feluda' recently, I expected the same from Byomkesh Bakshi. The stories were good but the translation was not up to the mark. A wrong edition to enjoy Byomkesh Bakshi stories.
I'd recommend Byomkesh Bakshi series to anybody and everybody who loves detective series. It's a shame I haven't come to read these before. I'd say Byomkesh is one of the finest Bengali detectives ever created, probably just behind Feluda.

This was a good read, I love detective fiction and Byomkesh is all time favourite, couple of stories selected were not elite ones and hence the book lost a star.
Completed it in one seating - start to finish.

Clever whodunits galore. Some stories were quite similar to the Feluda stories and some were quite simple. might have been because of the time period the stories were written in. But, overall a very good read
It's like a draft version is written without proper editing, as lots of mistakes and loop holes in a plan, that make is predictable and loose end lead to error in the novel

The stories are lovely, as always, and this collection had some that I had not read about.
However, the writing and editing are below average. Only a diehard fan would be able to look past this!

The Byomkesh Bakshi Stories is my third Diverse Detectives read in October.Written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, these stories are classics of 1930s Bengali literature. Bakshi is a ‘truth seeker’ rather than a detective – and it shows. Rather than being interested in restoring law and order, he often lets the culprits go free, or indeed, causes their deaths! This was a bit unexpected, as, I’ll be honest, I did initially read this as a Bengali interpretation of Sherlock Holmes.

While I was reading this book, Sushant Singh Rajput and Anand Tiwari - the actors who played Byomkesh and Ajit in the latest film version - were happily housed in my imagination, enacting the stories very energetically.
And thank god for that. Do not think me a snob if I say that translations of so many regional works into English are not at all up to the mark in India. I wish I knew Bengali so that I could compare this translation with Sharadindu Bandhopadhyay's original, but alas! Byomkesh Bak...more

Hooked and booked by Byomkesh Bakshi! Discovered him quite late in life, but the thrill of solving the mysteries still remain in this ardent fan of good detective stories. This translation lacks the finesse of another that I read just prior, 'Picture Imperfect and other mysteries'. However given the prime focus being on laying out a good detective read for us to solve in our heads, while BB does the honors in the tales, this is an adequate translation. My favorite story in the lot was 'Chorabali...more
Was excited to read this. Have never read any of the series and of course the film did add the fuel. However I found this a bit underwhelming. And not too mysterious. However, thanks to Dibakar Banerjee, it was easy to put faces on the names. Indeed no one else but Sushant came to mind at each moment of smirk, smile or Bakshi in deep thoughts.
Shailrahasya and Chorabali are the best from the lot.

The books takes you on a journey of late-1970 era. Famous 'Truthseeker' Byomkesh babu is at his best again. Indian Sherlock Holmes!!
This is an anthology which keeps you interested throughout the book. The language is fluid and the stories are fast-paced. The stories are simple enough to follow.
Overall it can be your best mate on journey :).

I vaguely remembered the Doordarshan series from my childhood. So i bought this to read a few of the stories & get to know Byomkesh better:)
Its an interesting series, written with an in-depth knowledge of Bengali society of the 70s & 80s. The mysteries are revealed with true detective flourish. A refreshing read for a quiet weekend!

An easy read detective story-set. Small stories which keeps you interested till the end.
The Indian version of Holmes/Poirot..
Not sure if I lost anything through the translation. Don't know Bengali to read the original.
Brought back memories of the series on Doordarshan.

byomkesh stories, are the captivating mysteries of my childhood, the thrill with which they are associated, always gives us the nerve chilling experiences whether they are on celluloid or written on a piece of paper..the only negative factor this book has is that it doesn't have full stories.

I loved the second story in this book, very intriguing. Rest of the stories were just about average and above, too predictive. Sharadindu gives away the plot while using devices in every story making it easy to predict. Did not find it very intelligent.

Good as one time read.
Hints or description are too obvious so doesnt hold much suspense till end. Overall okay one, few lines denotes too much typical thinking too like lady so must be at home around afternoon.

Perfectly translated, India's original Sherlock Holmes :)!
Perfectly-written whodunits set in Victorian decadent, lazy Bengal, perfectly translated for a perfect read. Not to be missed. Better than the TV series!

Love the stories. I wish the translation were better!
Not the best translation nor the better Byomkesh stories but a breezy read nonetheless.
